Summary:
Description: I. "Endurance and gallantry rewarded." A Chinese steward, who spent 133 days on a raft in the South Atlantic after being torpedoed, is rewarded with the British Empire Medal. Remainder of those seen at investiture ceremony are servicemen and women.
II. "Battle of the breakers." A surf carnival in New South Wales, showing breakers overturning one surf boat and others riding safely in. 80% of the crews are servicemen and commentary compares this struggle against the sea to struggle against the enemy. Life savers parade with their flags (Bondi, Cronulla, etc).
III. "Battle of the beaches." US Army invasion exercise on a British beach. Troops use amphibious vehicles, then storm an objective. Beaches are flat.
IV. "Lightnings." An outside briefing (for the camera's sake) of USAAF Lightning pilots, who are told to escort the Fortresses and not to break away individually. Target is Wilhelmshaven (not seen). Returning Lightning drops unused fuel tank.
V. "Dutchmen bomb France." Mitchells of the Royal Netherlands Naval Air Service take off for a daylight attack on Cherbourg docks. Clear film from a great height shows bomb explosions and also records the death spiral of a burning Mitchell.
