Summary:
Description: I. "The beach-head." Troops move through Anzio after the successful landings backed up by Naval bombardment. A wire-grid runway is hastily laid enabling USAAF Spitfires to take off and provide aerial cover. Optimism of report is tempered by night film of distant fires and explosions following a Luftwaffe attack, and General Alexander's admission "that these are critical days" although his reports remain confident.
II. "Dnieper onslaught." General film of an artillery barrage introduces a report on the liberation of Zaporozhe on the lower Dnieper. T-34 tanks advance, not obstructed by the anti-tank ditch dug by the Germans around the perimeter of the town and now being filled in by the Russians. Blazing buildings and the shells of houses indicate the devastation suffered by the city. Map of the Ukraine reveals importance of Dnieper river, which is crossed by the Red Army under fire (shells splash in the water, grass blazes on the banks) as they continue their advance and capture a dam (wrecked by the Germans) across the great river. View of General Vatutin, in command of the 1st Ukrainian Army. Item ends with soldiers marching through a liberated town and a barrage of Katyusha rockets being fired from a lorry.
