Summary:
Description: I. "Chancellor of the Exchequer." Sir John Anderson, speaking from his office after the budget, outlines present economic situation ("Our financial condition remains sound and healthy") and the post-war prospects ("a fuller and better life for all") although "the path will still be hard after the battle is won."
II. "Battle for Shaggy Ridge." Australian troops, assisted by native supply bearers, move up a steep hill and provide covering machine-gun and mortar fire. Mitchell and Kittyhawks make low-level attacks against "The Pimple", a hill near Shaggy Ridge, before film shows Australians at top of Ridge. A wounded soldier with the time of his last morphine injection marked on his forehead suggests the pain of losses sustained in a context wider than Shaggy Ridge.
III. "Birthday gift from her regiment." Princess Elizabeth, aged 18, stands with her family in Windsor Castle as the Grenadier Guards mount guard. Colonel presents her with replica of King's Colour of 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards inscribed with her own monogram.
IV. "A Fortress christened." Mary Churchill christens a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress "Stage Door Canteen." Vivien Leigh, Laurence Olivier and Alfred Lund present.
