  • Description: I. "Home from captivity." 600 servicemen, some of them protected personnel and others badly wounded, arrive by ship at Liverpool and are cheered by citizens as they depart for convalescent camps by train. RAF ex-POWs arrive at a camp where they each receive 6 pounds. Jack Carter of Movietone interviews several veteran ex-POWs (Boulogne, Norway in 1940) who declare that the Germans are now behaving better in the POW camps. Item concludes with a "typical" home-coming scene when soldier is hugged by fiancĂ©e and sister and proceeds to give comparatively vivid (by newsreel standards) account of his train journey from his camp across bomb-devastated Germany. II. "Fifth and Eighth fighting forward." Reinforcements land at Anzio before "the successful offensive", illustrated here by the occupation of Littoria and Aquino (where mines are cleared), and the departure from Anzio by landing-craft of Germans captured nearby. On the Cassino Front, Polish forces shell Piedimonte before moving into the town and accepting the surrender of German troops, including some who emerge from a dug-out.
