Description: I. RN and USN ships, including the Glasgow and Enterprise bombard Cherbourg, and are fired on in return by enemy shore batteries. Film shot later in the town reveals the devastation caused, including the knocked out gun emplacements. US troops advance along a road towards the town where they engage in street-fighting and return sniper fire. Prisoners emerge from buildings and are marched away, including a few women thought to have been employed on the fortifications. According to the commentary there was the "death penalty for attempted surrender." General von Schlieben and Rear-Admiral Hennecke surrender to Major General Collins.
