Summary:
Description: I. "Fantastic surrender." Major General Elster says goodbye to his staff before surrendering himself and his 20,000 men to a US General near Orleans. Coverage includes actual sound of American demanding surrender. Prisoners, including Luftwaffe personnel in horse-drawn vehicles and soldiers with bicycles bearing their equipment, move along a road before entering a large POW cage (aerial view) near the Loire.
II. "Forward into Germany." Pre-war aerial film of the Siegfried Line fortifications introduces report on Allied entry into Germany. US troops fire onto German soil before crossing a frontier stream and entering the first town to be taken, Roetgen. Commentary tries desperately to present few inoffensive-looking inhabitants as "enemies." Visual material which more aptly fits this vindictive attitude is the view of Wallendorf burning and in ruins. In the British sector (view of Generals. Hodges and Dempsey), troops drive on towards Nijmegen, aided by members of the Dutch Underground Army. Meanwhile a great airborne army sets off from Britain for "what may be one of the most decisive battles of the war." Men land (allegedly) at Arnhem.
