Summary:
Description: I. "Surrender in Italy." Recapitulates story of the Italian Campaign, stressing the British contribution right from Alamein through the critical moments at Salerno up to the recent liberation of Bologna. Supreme Commander in the Mediterranean Field Marshal Alexander described as "one of the greatest leaders of the war"; General Clark seen holding a captured Nazi flag. Importance of Italy, "regarded as vital theatre of war by the Germans", can be gauged by immense number of prisoners now in camp. Central item of newsreel is however the arrival of the German delegates (a Colonel and Major in civilian dress) at the Royal Palace, Caserta, to sign the terms of surrender. Lieutenant General Morgan speaks: "I understand that you are prepared to sign the terms of surrender?" "Ja" is the delegates' reply, qualified by the statement that they are "not able to guarantee terms will be accepted by superiors." Allied officers look on as the delegates sign, then Morgan signs. "Thank you, gentlemen. I ask you to withdraw now." Exit the Germans as the commentary jeers "One million men signed away by German Officers in sports coats."
