Summary: Introduction to gliding as a sport in the Soviet Union.
Description: The Wright Brothers' plane provided the model on which the Russians based their glider design. Pilot demonstrates controls of most common glider, the USCHI, straps himself in and takes off using bungey rope. Other take-off methods demonstrated are winch "developed by Soviet engineers" and by aero-tow (Polikarpov R-5) with R-5 towing three gliders. Animation illustrates a glider's method of thermal soaring and cross-country flying. Gliding is said to be a popular sport among Soviet youth and young pilots of both sexes are seen by their gliders (one marked with the youth organisation title Komsomol on the fuselage) with a Polikarpov U-2 in the background. Aerial shots of glider aerobatics and cut-ins of spectators. Three gliders are towed off airfield. Polikarpov I-153 Chicka performs aerobatics, as commentary concludes by lauding the achievements of Soviet pilots.
