- Summary: An Army Out of the Skies.
- Description: I. 'AN ARMY OUT OF THE SKIES.' Extensive footage taken at a British airfield shows the preparation for departure of an element of the airborne invasion force taking part in Operation Market Garden. Panoramic views shows scores of Handley-Page Halifax glider tug aircraft and Airspeed Horsa gliders parked on hardstanding at an unidentified Royal Air Force (RAF) airfield. A British paratrooper wearing a Denison smock, drives a Jeep up a loading ramp into the hold of a Horsa glider. British paratroopers wearing Denison smocks check their parachute webbing, a United States Army Air Force (USAAF) Douglas C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft stands in the background. British paratroopers congregate around Horsa gliders, where they smoke cigarettes and talk. RAF personnel climb into a Horsa named "Charlies Aunt." A hawser line is attached to a Waco CG-4A Hadrian glider and footage taken from its cockpit shows an Armstrong Whitworth Albemarle tug aircraft pulling it into the air. A Short Stirling Mk IV tug aircraft tows a Horsa into the air. Aerial footage shows Horsa gliders in flight. Aerial footage shows a Horsa attempting to land in a field in Holland, scores of other gliders litter the landscape. Stock shots show British paratroopers collecting supply canisters following a drop. British paratroopers run into the garden of a house in the suburbs of Arnhem. British paratroopers walk past a bullet-ridden German staff car that has a high ranking German officer lying dead by its open door (General Kussin ?). German Army prisoners are marched away by British paratroopers armed with Lee-Enfield .303-inch No.IV rifles. Dutch resistance fighters wearing "Oranje" armbands guard a long column of German troops, some of whom wear the 1944-issue dapple camouflage suits. US infantry ford a stream carrying M1 .30-inch carbines and Garand self-loading rifles. US White M3 half-tracks manoeuvre in the environs of Roetgen railway station. Captured German footage shows cheerful Wehrmacht troops using horse-drawn transport and bicycles, the commentary suggesting that these are now the only form of transport available to the retreating German forces. Brief footage shows Prince Felix cheered by assembled crowds on his return to Luxembourg following its liberation.
