Summary: Stages in the manufacture of tank tracks and engines.
Description: The film is divided into 20 numbered and titled sections. Throughout is seen a mix of men and women workers, the men generally doing the heavier work: (Reel 1) "Drawing office - designing the equipment for tank manufacture" - scenes of draughtsmen at work. "Making the patterns for the tank-track links" - rough wooden patterns are assembled and used to make a mould for soft metal, which is then carefully machined. "Making the link cores" - sand cores for the moulds are made and baked. "Making the link moulds" - the patterns are used to make sand moulds. "Assembling the cores in the moulds" - the cores are fitted into the moulds. (Reel 2) "Electric furnaces preparing the metal for the link castings" - operators prepare the molten metal amid showers of sparks. "Casting the link moulds". "Analysing the test-piece of the link casting" - a sample is subjected to various analyses in the laboratory. "The link castings are completed" - tipped out of the moulds and put on a conveyor. "Heat-treating the link castings". "Final-fettling the links" - the rough edges are ground off the links. "Assembling the links" - the links are assembled into track sections, checked for accuracy and loaded onto a lorry. (Reel 3) "Cylinder block moulding and casting" - sand moulds are prepared and cast. "Crankshaft moulding and casting" - the moulds are assembled from a stack of sections. "Cylinder block machining" - the V8 blocks are fitted into jigs for automatic machining. "Crankshaft manufacture operations" - crankshafts are machined from the raw castings to the final accurate form, checked for accuracy by special equipment at each stage. (Reel 4) "Piston manufacture" - pistons are machined and checked. "Engine assembly" - valves, springs, pistons, rods, bearings etc are all fitted together. "Dynamometer test" - the engine is fitted into a test rig and monitored. "Radiator manufacture".
