Summary: Stages in the manufacture of tank tracks at Leamington.
Description: The film is divided up into 10 sections: "Layout" A plan of the foundry is shown with key parts pointed out with a pencil. Raw materials (coal and scrap iron) are taken into the foundry. "Melting the iron and converting it into steel" the ingredients are shovelled into a furnace and the molten metal is poured into the converter where air is blown through. Operators control the air flow. "Pattern shop" Soft metal is fashioned into track link patterns. "Core making" Sand cores to produce cavities in the final mould are moulded into shape and baked. "Moulding" Sand moulds are made from the patterns and cores. "Casting the track links" Molten metal is poured into the moulds and allowed to set. The moulds are then shaken out. "Metal tests" In the laboratory tests are carried out on steel samples and on the final links. "Heat treatment of the track links" Residual bits of the moulds are sledge hammered off the castings, which are then hardened in a furnace and a quenching bath. "Fettling the track links" The rough edges are ground off the links. "Machining and assembly of the track links" The link pin holes are reamed out and the links pinned together and checked.
