Summary: INVASION...SICILY. An account of the invasion of Sicily, July 10th 1943.
Description: One of the largest combined fleets to have sailed the Mediterranean, consisting of US, Canadian and British ships, approached Sicily under cover of RAF bombers and fighters. Just before landing, a battle ensued, a British supply ship being sunk, a Spitfire shot down. In spite of this however, the landing was considered highly successful, and during the whole of the following day, men, guns, ammunition and carriers continued to land. The Sicilians showed no surprise or animosity at the landings, as the allies were to crush one of the largest Axis strongholds in the Mediterranean.
