Description: While greater numbers of reinforcements continue to arrive on the coast. The allies meet little opposition, suffering occasionally from Axis attacks on the coast, but with vast numbers of allied ships being saved. Along the invasion route, abandoned Italian equipment is much in evidence. Avola, the first town to be under allied direction, is now peaceful, prisoners embarking landing craft, to be transferred to ships bound for West Africa. The advance continues in the direction of Rosolini where the inhabitants give British and US a warm welcome on their arrival. The 8th Army continues to fight night and day, pushing on to Syracuse while they meet prisoners of war en route marching in the opposite direction.
