Summary: A film illustrating the concept behind, and the testing of Radar FA No 8 (Green Archer) Mk 4 mortar locating radar.
Description: Over a reconstruction of a mortar attack, the voice over explains that the mortar was responsible for one third of the casualties in recent wars. The Green Archer Mark 4 is a mobile mortar locating radar for use in the field. The radar is made up of three units: 1. Aerial and radar mainframe 2. Display Unit 3. Remote computers. The radar is carried in a modified M113, armoured personnel carrier. An animated diagram explains the function of the dual beam aerial. The CRT display is shown. The equipment is set up for use, including the reflector which is erected mechanically. In the laboratory, the circuitry and scanners are shown in detail. The controls of an operational unit are explained. A diagram of a CRT display shows mortar fire co-ordinates - Time/Range and Bearing. P1 and P2 displays are plotted on the same diagram.
The Green Archer is tested for battlefield conditions. It is put through a wind-tunnel where it remains operational with winds of 100km/hour, and suffers no damage with winds of 160km/hour. The TR unit is tested in a cold chamber. The mobility trials test using a variety of speeds and road conditions.
Title: Firing Trials; Larkhill.
