Summary: An RE unit belong to No 101 Beach Sub-Area assists in efforts aimed at refloating one of the many vessels driven aground by high winds during the three day long gale off the Normandy coast.
Description: Two armoured bulldozers belonging to No 50 (?) Mechanical Equipment Section RE scoop sand and shingle away from the hull of SS Yewglen, a 600-ton ammunition carrying coaster beached on June 18th at Lion-sur-Mer. The two machines then excavate a channel leading from the stranded vessels stern to the bottom of the beach (at present at low tide) which will allow it to be towed out to sea once the high tide has set in. Ratings from an RN Beach Group commando assist in this task. Note the numerous warships and merchantmen anchored off 'Sword' Beach in the background.
