Summary: 30th Corps ambitious attempt to link up with the three Allied airborne divisions dropped on the five major river and canal crossings in southern Holland runs into immediate trouble.
Description: Tanks, infantry and soft-skinned transport belonging to the Irish Guards Group and two 86th Field Regiment RA OP tanks are seen crossing the Meuse-Escaut Canal at De Groote Barrier before Operation "Garden" gets under way. On the main road between the Dutch frontier and Valkenswaard, a 2nd Irish Guards bren-gunner fires on German positions barring further progress northwards. Having been flushed out of their positions, German soldiers from 'Kampfgruppe Walther' are sent running down the centre-line, passing vehicles belonging to the Guards Armoured Division and the 2nd Household Cavalry Regiment held up by their comrades anti-tank and self-propelled guns. The route along "Hell's Highway" is blocked by a Loyd carrier which, hit by a mortar bomb, emits spouts of incandescent material over the road.
