Summary: Situated at the extreme eastern end of 'Sword' Beach, the port of Ouistreham lies exposed to German artillery bombardment from the east bank of the Orne estuary.
Description: The cameraman examines the lighthouse at the mouth of the Canal de Caen de la Mer which is somewhat the worse for wear after frequent German shelling; a Dennis tipper lorry is parked nearby. The cameraman surveys the harbour basin at Ouistreham where several vessels scuttled or sunk on D-Day lie half- submerged; a Bedford water truck moves over a Class 40 Bailey bridge built by 1st Corps engineers over the lock gates leading into the harbour. A signboard points the way to Ranville and the main part of Ouistreham; buildings badly damaged by German bombardments are situated nearby. From the lighthouse, a member of a Royal Navy Forward Observer and Bombardment Liaison team scans the east bank of the Orne estuary beyond a stretch of beach lying between the mouth of the Caen canal and the Orne River itself.
