Summary: In a measure designed to preserve the Calvados region's depleted livestock from further loss, stray and abandoned farm animals found in the Odon Valley in 8th Corps' sector of the front are rounded up and looked after by British troops before being evacuated to safe areas.
Description: Under the supervision of 53rd (Welsh) Division's Corps of Military Police provost company, British troops lead a herd of cows away from the front line through the shattered village of Cheux to a livestock pen where they are cared for by men drawn from various units who have farming experience. A CMP corporal writes down the map reference indicating precisely where a calf was found onto a tag tied around its neck; a Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers fitter, with obvious expertise, attends to a cow in need of milking. The cameraman observes cows, sheep and horses resting in the pen. Assisted by British soldiers, French farmers lead a large number of the animals away to farms administered by 21st Army Group's civil affairs department.
