Summary: An instructional film on the effects of war "gases" and protective measures to be taken.
Description: (Reel 1) The film shows the chemical composition (diagrams) and the physical properties of the chemical weapons "Lost" (mustard gas - dichlorodiethylsulphide), "N-Lost" (nitrogen mustard - trichlorotriethylamine) and Lewisite (dichloro-chlorovinylarsine), all of which are heavy, oily liquids and powerful vesicants (i.e. blister-causing). Animation shows their effects on human skin, followed by examples on human subjects - a drop of each is placed on the subject's arm and the resulting damage (from a small swelling, through a large blister, to eventual healing) shown at intervals from 2 hours to 4 to 5 weeks. The effects on the eye are illustrated with a drop of mustard gas administered on a calf's eye and monitored over a similar period.
(Reel 2) The second part of the film, "Schutz und Entgiftung", deals with protection (gas masks and gas blankets) and decontamination. A soldier treats a few spots on his arm himself, while a small team deal with more major cases - treating eyes, supervising the washing down of another victim, decontaminating weapons, equipment and clothing. The film follows a stretcher case to a larger treatment centre where he and the stretcher are washed down and his leg wound attended to.
(Reel 3) Finally the layout of a large troop decontamination centre is shown, with troops stripping down and depositing weapons and equipment. A special clothing decontamination unit is shown.
