Summary: A Naval instructional film which covers the purpose of THE Main (M) Coil in neutralising vertical magnetism in ships which triggers magnetic mines and affects compasses. The film shows vertical magnetism's distribution to be weaker at the tapered ends of the ship and how the M Coil, while compensating for this vertical magnetism at the centre of the ship, does not exactly match it at the ends leading to a disparity known as the M Coil Misfit. The purpose of the M Coil to minimise this misfit is discussed including the Three Part M Coil with independently adjustable front, midship and rear sections.
