Summary: A documentary account of the move, in July 1989, of a spare reactor pressure vessel (RPV), as used in a nuclear reactor, from the Royal Navy Store Depot at Llangennech in Wales to long term storage at Portsmouth.
Description: "Part 1 - Loading at Llangennech". A special tractor and trailer unit (120 feet long and powered at both ends) arrives for the lift. The large RPV is brought by low loader from within the store building. Two cranes in tandem then remove the storage frame surrounding the RPV and replace it with a more robust transport frame; the RPV is then loaded onto the trailer. Argon gas cylinders are added to purge the RPV, and the whole rig is covered in tarpaulin for the journey. Transport rig is welded into place.
"Part 2 - Offloading at RN Base Portsmouth". The RPV is unloaded at 100 Store, Portsmouth: ample headroom within the store building means that the trailer can be driven directly in and the RPV (still in its transport frame) are unloaded by crane into storage. The RPV is then covered in polythene to keep it clean.
