Summary: Army Instructional film in several parts on boat handling, intended for trainees in the early stages of training. The film follows the same crew, commanded by a Sergeant, as they carry out the various tasks necessary for each section of the film.
Description: I. Reels 1 and 2 shows how to leave a berth and the differences in handling between single and twin propeller boats. Turning and the helmsman's equipment are also shown.
II. Reel 3 describes the types of anchor available, the principles on which they work, letting go and weighing anchor and elements of the chartwork required.
III. Reel 4 shows the basics of leaving a jetty under different conditions, demonstrating how to compensate for the effects of wind and tide.
IV. Reel 5 (not held).
V. Reel 6 is concerned with towing, and shows the proper way of passing and securing towing lines before towing another vessel either alongside or astern.
VI. Reel 7 describes Kedging: an emergency method of moving a vessel by laying out an anchor and hauling towards it. Variations are shown in which an anchor is allowed to drag as a means of moving the boat, and another in which alternate anchors are used to haul a vessel short distances.
