Summary: Detailed technical description of Type 85 Radar, its installation and its role in UK defence.
Description: Synopsis reads:
'Film. T85 Radar Equipment. Joint Production of RSRE and AEI.
T85 designed to detect aircraft in a jamming environment. It is one of the most powerful Radars ever made and is currently in use at the main Air Defense Radar stations.
Radar design was conceived at RSRE and developed and produced by AEI.
Film is detailed description of Radar starting from basic need for very high transmitter power, narrow beam-width and frequency agility.
Each section of the Radar is described in some detail with the emphasis on the Radar's performance when subject to jamming. Both active and passive detection of targets are described.
The height finding capability is shown as well as the method of concentrating max. TX. power in 6 beams to increase the "burn-through" performance in the presence of jamming. The film is of historical interest because it represents a very high technical achievement in producing a Radar of this performance with vacuum tubes. The size and complexity of this Radar and its performance against jamming are its outstanding features.'
A more technically detailed description is given on the shot list (see file for full description including running times etc):
