Summary: Several numbered tapes showing British participation in United Nations activities - UNFICYP (United Nations Force in Cyprus) and Egypt (MFO - Multinational Force and Observers) during November 1984.
Description: (Tape 1) Cyprus. Regimental Headquarters of UNFICYP Support Regiment, showing vehicle park of 15 Squadron Royal Corps of Transport, also Royal Engineers detachment - sign on wall "Sigara icmek Memnudur" (Turkish for "Smoking is Prohibited"). REME workshop. Gate of the British UNFICYP headquarters and checkpoint (including view from inside vehicle). General views of the derelict Nicosia International Airport. Views of watchtower: sign "69 Sqn". (ca 15 mins)
(Tape 4) Cyprus. Sign "BRITCON MEDICAL CENTRE IN-PATIENTS WARD". Views of checkpoints and observation posts along the Green Line separating the Greek and Turkish communities. Ferret armoured cars (painted in UN white livery) patrol along coastal road. Another observation post. Camps in the various sectors, including the AUSCON (Australian Contingent) at Camp Duke Leopold V and the SWEDCON (Swedish Contingent) headquarters at Camp Victoria. Swedish soldier swings his gun during an impressive weapons drill. (ca 20 mins)
(Tape 6) Cyprus. Observation post staffed by members of DANCON (the UN Danish Contingent) at their headquarters; British Army Ferret armoured car at gate. At Nicosia International Airport, a Wasp helicopter of the Army Air Corp (part of the UNFICYP Flight) powers up ready to take off. Aerial shots over airport and along the Green Line. Wessex helicopter lands at an observation post near a village. Camera-helicopter comes in to land. Danish troops load supplies onto Wessex which takes off; a second Wessex lands, and jerricans are unloaded. Further aerial views show another Wessex landing, this time at the Danish base. (ca 20 mins)
(Tape 7) Cyprus. Near an observation post on the Green Line, a Wessex helicopter comes in to land and takes off again. Air-to-ground views show a second heicopter (with underslung load) flying below, where it comes in to land at Observation Post D-12 on top of a mountain. Interior views of camera-helicopter (a Wasp) and shots of Wessex delivering supplies to D-12. Camera-helicopter comes in to land and is refuelled. Further aerial views show a resupply at another remote observation post, B-22. Overflight of Nicosia International Airport; camera-helicopter comes in to land once more. (ca 20 mins)
(Tape 8) Egypt. View across the desert towards the Pyramids; Arabs and their camels are near the centre. Views of Cairo and the Nile (flowing through urban section; camera position is on a bridge). Cyprus: map of the island showing the five sectors current in 1984: Sector 6 (Australia); Sector 5 (Sweden); Sector 4 (Canada); Sector 2 (UK) and Sector 1 (Denmark). Further map shows more detailed deployments including other contingents. (ca 15 mins)
(Tape 9) Egypt. Medal Parade at BRITCON for members of the MFO (Multinational Force and Observers). This is followed by very poor quality scenes - dark screen with just a few points of light visible; live music is playing, suggesting that this is badly underexposed footage of a concert. (ca 15 mins)
(Tape 10) Egypt. General views of old town with marina. Sign "Welcome to El Gorah": checkpoint patrolled by black soldiers in berets. (El Gorah was the base of the MFO which monitors the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel in the Sinai Peninsula.) Scenes of aircraft and helicopter movements at the El Gorah Flight Line and the RWAU (Rotary Wing Aviation Unit) headquarters. View from vehicle driving through Sinai Desert; radio installation (guarded by barking dogs) is passed. (ca 20 mins)
