Summary:This documentary records a Dutch trawler on its annual voyage to the Dogger Bank, the fishing ground for herring. The film stresses the co-operation at sea between fishermen of several nations.
Description:Preparations are underway for the departure of the Scheveningen (Netherlands) fleet. Nets are checked and boats are repaired and maintained. Women sing while they make nets. Coopers prepare barrels, buoys are distributed, and nets are loaded. The 'herring flag' is hoisted – an award to the ship that brought in the best catch, in the previous year. The fleet departs, heading for the North sea fishing area of Doggerbank, its location indicated on a map. Communication between the ships is by radio, and an electronic sounding device is used to determine sea depth. A flag is raised to indicate that the boat's captain is shooting the nets, marking its territory. Night falls, with a watch kept to avoid other ships hitting the nets. At 2AM the crew is wakened. They dress in oilskins and prepare cigarettes. On deck, the nets are hauled in and the fish shaken out. A porpoise hunts the herring thrown back overboard. The fish are prepared and packed for the voyage home. The film ends as a boat makes its way back through rough seas.
