- Film Number: JIN 118
- Other titles: INDIAN ARMY OPERATIONS IN SOUTH EAST ASIA DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR [Allocated Series Title]
- Summary: With the surrender of Japan, troops of 25th Indian Division return to Kuala Lumpur, capital of the Federated Malay States, and Lieutenant-General Roberts (commander XXXIV Indian Corps) takes the surrender of Lieutenant-General Ishiguro and the Japanese 29th Army.
- Description: A view from a DUKW (‘Duck’) amphibious truck underway a short distance offshore, looking towards land with a number of beached landing craft. Looking forward toward the Indian driver of the Duck, with two officers (one British, one Indian) in conversation. A Buffalo tracked amphibian (also known as Landing Vehicle Tracked, LVT) underway, apparently making fairly heavy weather. On a narrow road (near Klang?) a jeep passes two local cyclists and passes underneath a small victory archway decorated with Allied flags. A line of residential buildings (low wooden houses) flying Allied flags; washing hangs out on lines, a number of small children are watching, and an Indian soldier walks across shot. A jeep drives down the main road in Klang. Different angle; a heavy lorry drives past a small clocktower (in a commercial district?). A high and wide shot of trucks parked on the maidan; tents have been pitched and a small stage and awnings appear to be under construction. A view of the Sultan of Selangor’s palace (?). A number of lorries laden with troops drive down a main road (near the maidan?); a small crowd of civilians watch without obvious emotion. Truckload of Indian soldiers passing. A street scene taken at a junction of Foch Avenue (now Jalan Cheng Lock); buildings with flags. A column of Indian troops marches along the road with a large civilian crowd watching. A high shot from a window showing troops marching past the junction, followed by a staff car and military lorries. Another view from the window showing a Union flag flying opposite and lorries passing below. Street level; crowd in the street. At 53rd Indian Infantry Brigade headquarters a number of Japanese officers get out of a car; they wear white armbands. A guard of honour on parade as a number of staff cars arrive. Lieutenant-General Ouvry Roberts arrives for the surrender conference at the Victoria Institution; he wears the leaping panther badge of XXXIV Indian Corps. Roberts returns the salute of the guard of honour. He inspects the guard (from 2nd Battalion 2nd Punjab Regiment); they wear the patches of 25th Indian Division. Underlit interiors during the conference; a Japanese officer is handed some papers. Roberts, a naval officer (probably Captain E T Cooper) and an RAF officer (probably Air Vice-Marshal the Earl of Bandon) arriving at the conference hall. The Japanese officers sit (backs to camera) in front of the Allied delegation; a large Union flag hangs behind. Alternative angle shows a crowd of cameramen and photographers at work. Medium close-up Roberts at the conference table. Roberts signs several documents. Japanese Lieutenant-General Teizo Ishiguro (commander, 29th Army) signing the surrender documents. Close-up Ishiguro. The Japanese officers (including Ishiguro and his Chief of Staff, Naoichi Kawahara) salute before departing. Exterior shot; Japanese officers leaving the hall and a British soldier with Sten gun escorts them out. High wide shot overlooking a large government building (probably the General Post Office building); a crowd has assembled. Street level shot with guard of honour at the ‘present arms’. A contingent of sailors marches toward camera; Roberts, frame left, takes the salute. Different angle; a number of 25-pounder field guns are towed past the saluting base. Women waving British flags (similar to Union flags but with various small insignia). More troops march past. Indian troops passing. Sikh troops passing. More Indian (Garhwali?) troops passing.
