Title:HEAVY MORTARS IN ACTION NEAR ROERMOND, HOLLAND [Allocated Title]
Film Number:A70 200-1
Other titles:
Summary: Heavy mortars go into action with 71st Brigade in the Roermond bend of the Maas.
Description: Two 4.2 inch mortars belonging to the 1st Battalion Manchester Regiment's 'D' company are seen being assembled by men from No 12 platoon in revetted firing emplacements outside the village of Horn (?) and made ready for firing. Both detachments are seen in action (bombarding a target inside Roermond on the east bank of the Maas); the loaders hold the bombs over the 4.2 inch mortars' muzzles before letting them drop down the barrel onto the base firing spike while other members of the four-man teams are seen sticking fingers into their ears as protection against the noise of the barrage. One of the 4.2 inch mortars is traversed onto a new target bearing; once firing has ceased, a camouflage net is unrolled to cover its emplacement.
