Summary: The village of Maltot, first captured briefly on July 10th and finally re-taken on July 23rd by the 5th Battalion Wiltshire Regiment, remains in British hands.
Description: German direction signs nailed onto a tree outside the village serve as a visible reminder of its former occupants. Maltot itself is uninhabitable; its main street is lined with gutted cottages and covered with debris. Wrecked and abandoned equipment from both sides litter the ruins; two infantrymen from the Wiltshire Regiment inspected equipment left behind by the 271 Infantry Division including a Mauser Kar 98K rifle. Road signs point the way to local villages still in German hands; a few yards away a 7th RTR Churchill tank lies in wait among the ruins for a possible German counter-attack. From a Forward Observation Post, knocked-out British tanks can be seen on the slopes of Hill 112.
