Summary: A brief profile of the history and culture of the NATO member country Portugal.
Description: This film presents the cultural, economic and military character of Portugal as a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Orgainsation. The importance of the sea and the nation's sea-going heritage is emphasised. Children are shown learning seamanship in school and visiting Lisbon's maritime museum. An animated map indicates the history of Portuguese exploration. Portugal's ecclesiastical architecture is presented in montage. The agricultural strengths of the country are described, before the film moves to Lisbon. Here, Belém Tower appears, and Lisbon's rapid 20th century growth is mentioned. Bull fighting and football introduce a section on recreation in Portugal: people are also shown golfing, swimming and yachting. The country's political institiutions are described as democratic and stable. Aspects of naval training are shown, and the geographic importance of Portugal and the Azores is described with relevance to the Atlantic ocean and Western Europe.
Two additional versions are held. One (in French only) has had the section on the politics of the country removed. The other (in English only) has reworked and alternative content. This version covers much the same subject matter, though in an alternative order and with a more detailed narration. This version has increased coverage of Lisbon life, omits significant mention of Portugal’s politics and offers an alternative section on leisure which focuses instead on how increased agricultural mechanisation allows the Portuguese the free time to enjoy Fado.
