Summary: A brief profile of the history and culture of the NATO member country Iceland.
Description: Following the opening titles the film begins with a description of Iceland’s geographic position and its basic geology. Icelanders make use of underground thermal energy in both home and industry, such as greenhouses. Some of the workings of the country’s agriculture are explained: cooperatives active in the dairy industry, ongoing expansion of fields due to growing population, and student participation in the harvest. Several views are provided of the pony roundup and sheep are shown being transported to market by aeroplane from a remote farm. Shots of textiles indicate the use of wool in domestic production. The film notes that Icelanders make extensive use of a network of internal flights. Fish processing in support of the nation’s considerable fleet is performed using both traditional and modern technological methods, facilitating export. Icelandic children benefit from high social welfare standards; they are shown learning to swim, receiving sun treatments and a daily dose of cod liver oil. Following on from a section the country’s literary and democratic heritage the film notes that Iceland’s participation in NATO is limited due to its lack of armed forces, though its safety is guaranteed by its fellow member nations. Icelanders are shown dancing in the street, celebrating the anniversary of gaining full independence from Denmark. The significance of Iceland’s location is emphasised: radio broadcasts are made from Gufunes of weather information to assist the navigation of flights across the Atlantic. The film draws to a close with aerial views over the country.
A shorter version is also held. This version significantly shortens the section on Iceland's agriculture and also lacks the reflections on the country's membership in NATO.
