Summary: A brief profile of the history and culture of the NATO member country the United States of America (US).
Description: The immigrant and colonial nature of US history introduces the film. Historical buildings of Boston and Cambridge appear. The US population is presented as being as diverse as its landscape. The country enjoys peaceful relations with its neighbours. Cross-party political support exists for the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. New York serves as the home of the United Nations. Having successfully participated in the defence of Europe, returning soldiers are shown attending university or resuming the working of the land. An appreciation for community assistance in the national character is identified as the motivation for the provision of post-war economic assistance to Europe through the Marshall Plan. US troops return to Europe to offer protection, and the country’s navy – including the USS Nautilus , the first nuclear powered submarine – patrols the shipping routes of the Atlantic. President Eisenhower is shown attending an exhibition on the civilian use of atomic energy as part of the 'Atoms for Peace' programme. The mechanisation of industry is particularly highlighted, and the workforce is characterised as benefitting significantly from the organisation of the US economy. The increasingly suburban character of US family life is shown, as are the leisure opportunities of baseball, football, fishing, and gardening. Culturally, the US benefits from public libraries and widespread literary interests. A thriving artistic scene is operated professionally and by amateurs. Classical music provides an ongoing cultural link to the ‘Old World’. The film ends in emphasising the relative youth of the United States as a country, and its commitment to democracy.
