Summary: The problem of aerial navigation and the task of coordinating military and civil air operations in the European airspace, with emphasis on the work of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) Committee on European Airspace Coordination.
Description: ‘Airspace’ highlights the importance of NATO in managing the relationship between civil and military aviation. Setting the scene for a new world of rapidly advancing aviation technology, where the increasingly busy skies over Europe create challenges in airspace coordination.
The military perspective is demonstrated by various NATO nations participating in an air show, where multinational air forces exhibit their operational aircraft, including; an RAF Vulcan and some United States Air Force Boeing B-52’s.
From the civil perspective, the De Havilland Comet 4 is shown in flight, followed by air traffic controllers monitoring the crowded airspace. An example of a near miss, or “air miss”, between a commercial aircraft and a military jet provides a narrative for explaining how the relationship is managed on a practical level. NATO play a role in the prevention of such instances, acting as an intermediary they host the NATO Committee on European Airspace Coordination (CEAC) conference at their headquarters near Paris.
The CEAC help to ensure the airspace is used safely and economically, whilst allowing maximum freedom for NATO air forces to undertake training or scramble aircraft in an emergency. Furthermore, the benefit of military technology being used to advance commercial air travel is endorsed as an additional benefit of cooperation.
