Summary: A documentary about the establishment of an Air Defence Ground Environment system (NADGE) by the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) during the Cold War. Conceived as an automated radar installation, NADGE worked in unison with a chain of defence control centres. Acting as an early warning system, NADGE enabled NATO nations to quickly identify and intercept enemy aircraft entering their airspace.
Description: Stretching from Europe’s North Cape to Asia Minor, radar and other supporting installations were strategically positioned to monitor NATO’s Eastern perimeter. A similar system, adopted by North American countries, is profiled as an example of how the system could be used to rapidly respond to an identified threat by scrambling fighter jets or firing anti-aircraft missiles.
The documentary details how traditional air defence systems had been made redundant by advances in supersonic and long range aircraft technology. Prompting the establishment of NADGECO (NATO Air Defence Ground Environment Corporation), an international consortium of companies tasked with implementing a 300 million dollar project to modernise the air defence systems of 15 NATO nations.
