Summary: Television documentary on the NATO Defence College after its relocation, after fifteen years, from Paris to Rome.
Description: The film opens with views of Rome. The city's classical and renaissance architecture is contrasted with that of EUR, new home (from 1967) of the NATO Defence College. Italian President Giuseppe Saragat is shown at the inauguration of the new College, as is Secretary General of NATO, Manlio Brosio. The former site of the College - the École Militaire in Paris - is shown, and its heritage briefly described. The College's student body is comprises civil servants and military officers (of colonel rank, or higher) from NATO member countries. Experts give lectures on a variety of topics such as logistics, tactics and classified military technology. Smaller discussion groups are former, encouraging greater understanding between students. General Dwight Eisenhower, the first Supreme Allied Commander Europe, is identified as the original proposer of the College. The opening of the final course (29) at the College's Paris home is shown. Students listen to magnetic recordings of French speakers. Translation into both French and English is provided for all lectures. Students form a tour group to visit SHAPE at Rocquencourt. A short sequence highlights the technologically advanced state of warfare. Faculty advisors plan visits for the students to military and industrial centres in North America. Reunions of students are also organised, and footage appears of the thirteenth reunion, held at NATO headquarters in Paris. The course concludes after six months with a graduation ceremony. The graduation medallion and diploma of J. C. Krieger of the 28th course are shown. Commandant of the College, General E. Tufte Johnsen addresses the camera. Johnsen states that while the location of the college has changed, its mission hasn't: improving "members' understanding of both world problems and of each other's point of view."
A second, earlier version of the film is held. This version alludes to the withdrawl of France from the NATO integrated military structure and has less coverage of the College's new home in Rome. Concluding remarks in the narration indicate that this site was still being prepared. This version also makes reference to civlian graduates from industry and commerce, unmentioned in the later version. Footage of the inauguration is absent as are General Johnsen's speech.
A third, shorter version is also held. Intended for TV use, the film lacks commentary. Its visual content emphasises exposition of the College's history and changed location over details of its programme.
