Summary: A documentary on the "Atlantic Lion" exercise which took place in the Federal Republic of Germany, part of the 1983 Exercise Autumn Reforge featuring troops from the USA, UK, Federal Republic of Germany and the Netherlands.
Description: Because of the importance of "keeping our guard, even in peacetime", NATO carries out annual manoeuvres in which the interaction between forces of various nationalities is rehearsed. Views of the operations room of "Atlantic Lion" are followed by various aspects of the exercise: bridgelaying, setting up off field communications, coordination of troops by 1st US Cavalry Division, movement and supplies, vehicle maintenance, field hospital. Participants talk with local people during a lull in the exercise. The forces try to keep damage to a minimum: any damage by NATO forces is reported and compensated. VIP visits to the exercise by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) General Bernard B Rogers. Clean-up after the end of manoeuvres. Stress on the need to test NATO's armed forces in peace time ready for any real emergency "we hope will never come".
