Summary: The non-military rôle of NATO, illustrated by its activities in the fields of science and environment protection.
Description: The ways in which NATO helps the scientific community is highlighted by the role of the Science Committee and the Scientific Affairs Division, "a vast invisible university" which helps students to gain scientific experience. Scholarships are issued which allow students to study at institutions in other NATO countries. The film introduces Andrew Barlow, a British researcher studying the synthetises of reserpine at Columbia University, New York, Maria Castellino, a Spanish researcher studding the causes of stroke and heart attack in Milan, Italy and Klaus Selke, a German researcher studying applied robotics at the University of Hull, United Kingdom. Futher NATO science initiatives are illustrated, including Advanced Study Institutes and Advanced Research Workshops. The film shows a Summer school held at Les Houches, France on theoretical physics. In Limone sul Garda, Italy a workshop convenes to consider longevity. At Villa Olmo on the shore of Lake Como, Italy, a further workshop is held on quantum theory.
Projects forming part of the initiative “Science for Stability” in several NATO countries with less well developed economies are shown. In Greece a research vessel has been constructed which will allow for the measurement of fish stocks. In Turkey at the TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center in Gebze the control of moulds forming during production of food is studied. In Portugal at LNETI, the National State Laboratory for Industrial Research, new methods of extracting metal for ore are investigated.
The social role of NATO is also illustrated with reference to the Committee on the Challenges of Modern Society (CCMS). Formed in 1969 CCMS consider the problems stemming from pollution in the environment. An example of this in application is provided by work on the preservation of stained glass windows from acid rain damage. At Cologne cathedral in Germany work is underway repairing and protecting the glass of the cathedral with a liquid coating developed at Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research, Würzburg. The coating improves the chemical durability of glass and the benefits of the research are enjoyed by other churches. The Exxon research center at Annandale, New Jersey, United States is also shown, where work is being done on the application of lasers. The film ends in emphasising the importance of cooperation in scientific endeavour and the significance of scientific progress to NATO’s purpose.
