Summary: A documentary film made to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Turkish Republic, jointly funded by the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) and the Turkish Government. The film underlines the vital influence of Kemal Atatürk in the establishment of the Republic and highlights Turkey’s major social reforms, major geographical assets and vital resources. Turkey’s role within NATO is also covered.
Description: This brief history of Turkey since the First World War and the founding of the Republic is supported by archive footage. Kemal Atatürk’s military successes and political innovations are profiled, including changes that saw the “Caliphate and Koranic Law, replaced by a civil code and the modern Faculty of Law.” Other changes made under Kamal include the replacement of the traditional Arab scrip with a new alphabet, and compulsory education.
Key geographical landmarks are tied into the narrative, such as the Pamukkale, Cappadocia and the Bosporus. Some of Turkey's Ottoman and Byzantine history, including the renaming of Constantinople to Istanbul, is covered.
The development of new industry and agriculture are used to show how Turkey has entered a modernised era. Mechanisation is shown to have resulted in higher economic output and Associate Membership of the European Common Market.
Turkey’s membership of NATO is said to have provided both stability and independence. The hardware of NATO’s joint security structure, aircraft, radar and secure communications are upheld as evidence of enhanced security and modernisation. Heavy industries such as iron and steel are stated to have grown from “almost nothing to 4 million tons a year”.
The nations more international outlook is demonstrated by cars, aircraft and ferries crossing the inland sea to Tehran or further beyond.
