Summary: The evolution of fighter aircraft from the earliest days until 1962 with emphasis on integration of Fighter Commands within the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO).
Description: One of the main themes is introduced early on, the development of the man/machine combination which is said to still have an important part to play in air defence. Few realised before 1914 the military implications or potential of flight; the First World War dogfight was essentially a personal duel. Technical advances: greater firepower, better power units. The inter-war years: progress despite lack of official interest through speed competitions - the Schneider Trophy and the Supermarine S6B. The development of radar. Airpower "decisive" in World War Two - its role as "diving artillery". The jet: Gloster Whittle E28/29 and Heinkel He 178. The V2 - "destruction unlimited" or "way to the stars"? The modern military jet is guaranteed government backing. Radar defences straddle the Pole , but air defence is not entirely by robot, men are all-important in a combined air force which provides "instant readiness", the only answer to aggression.
