Summary: North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) documentary concentrating on the NATO role of the Boeing E-3A Sentry surveillance aircraft - also known as AWACS (Airborne Early Warning and Control System).
Description: Shots of fortresses and other defensive installations from earlier times lead to the statement that "today we need a lot more than brick walls". Part of modern defence is the E-3A aircraft which is "patrolling in constant skywatch" above Europe; it is operated by the Airborne Early Warning Force based at Geilenkirchen in Germany - an international force. A typical mission is shown, featuring aircraft codenamed "Magic 50" and "Magic 54". Four Soviet aircraft are noted on radar - two turn back but two "Bear" long range bombers enter airspace over northern Norway, heading towards NATO manoeuvres in the Atlantic. They are tracked by Magic 50. Norwegian F16 aircraft scramble, as do Phantoms from RAF Leuchars; they intercept the aircraft and guide them back into international airspace. Also seen is Magic 54 being refuelled in flight.
