Summary:Tim Hetherington's short film 'Diary' is an impressionistic stream of consciousness reflecting on his memories/experiences of reporting on and documenting conflict for a decade. The film contains some graphic imagery.
Description:Opening with a ceiling fan spinning, growing louder and then slowly merging with the sound of propeller blades, before cutting to the inside of an aircraft as it approaches a rugged coastline. Fading out once again and cutting to the inside of a vehicle travelling along a country road in Liberia, as young Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy (LURD) rebel fighters point an assault rifle out of a passenger window. The film continues in this scrambled form throughout, contrasting the different experiences of a modern conflict journalist, and using editing techniques to create a sense of jumping between different times and locations. Despite not appearing in the film, Tim Hetherington, as subject and filmmaker, is present in more subtle forms, in shadows and in the first person perspective from which many of the scenes are shot.
