Summary:General Eisenhower meets NATO colleagues, participates in inspections of military personnel and ceremonials in his honour and travels between locations whilst on his farewell tour of Italy, 1952.
Description:Admiral Carney arrives at Udine Airport and greets General Eisenhower upon the SACEUR's arrival shortly afterwards; General De Castiglioni is also present. After arriving, General Eisenhower inspects twenty thousand troops of NATO Southern Command, watches a flypast by NATO jets and delivers a speech; General De Castiglioni and Admiral Carney are in attendance. At Army Headquarters, Udine, Italy, General Eisenhower is presented with a model of the St Marco Lion; the two Generals Eisenhower and De Castiglioni leave and drive to the airport, where Eisenhower boards his "Columbine" aircraft. General Eisenhower visits Rome, 5 June 1952: he is driven to the Hotel Villa Medica Hassler in his Alfa Romeo car by a chauffeur wearing an "I LIKE IKE" badge beneath his lapel. At the hotel, he meets Major Canati. General Eisenhower pays a farewell visit to Italian President Luigi Einaudi and Prime Minister Alcide de Gasperi at the Presidential Palace, Rome; whilst in Rome General Eisenhower visits the hall and gardens of the Villa Moderne, accompanied by General De Castiglioni Prime Minister De Gasperi. Later, at Ciampino Airport, Rome, the General holds a press conference and reviews honour guard before boarding his "Columbine" aircraft and leaving for France.
