Summary:Film profiling the use of Marshall Plan funds in Italy along the route of the Appian Way, between Rome and Brindisi.
Description:Reconstruction and recovery of territory crossed by the old Roman road, via Appia (the Appian Way). Places featured include Volturno, where many Americans died in the Second World War. A column in Brindisi marks one end of the route. Marshall Plan money is being used to reclaim land on the route and reinvigorate exhausted areas. Material, a mountain village, is briefly profiled. Marshall Plan funds are being used here to construct modern housing and train locals for employment. The Volturno river is shown, and reference made to United States casualties here during the Second World War. Moving north the film shows the Garigliano river. The village of Itri appears, with rusting armaments. Hundreds of thousands of Marshall Plan dollars are to be set aside for the construction of new houses along the Appian Way. Rome's Ciampino airport is shown, and its enlargement and increased traffic are stressed. KLM's Douglas DC-4 aircraft (EDAM) appears. The Way reaches Rome at Porta Appia (Porta San Sebastian).
