Summary:How co-operation among farmers, new methods, and Marshall Aid machinery (such as caterpillar tractors) are combining to reclaim the Camargue, the region of the Rhône delta in Southern France, thus increasing many times the rice yield and prosperity of this region. A French government programme supported by aid allows the reclamation of the salty marshes from the Mediterranean waters and their irrigation with fresh water allows the people to grow increased rice crops, in addition to the tending the traditional livestock (bulls) of the area.
Description:The film depicts an agricultural revolution within the Camargue, the delta region of the River Rhône. Here, farming has traditionally focused on keeping bulls, rather than growing crops, due to the salty water that impacts the region's soil. A plan is developed to drain and clear the delta, and redirect fresh water to repurpose the land. Montages present views of the work and new infrastructure. While most of the farmers support the change, there is some resistance to the abandoning of tradition. The farmers learn to operate the new equipment, provided by the European Recovery Program (ERP), in tilling the land for planting. The redirected fresh water allows for the planting of rice and its successful harvest. The farmers celebrate the harvest, welcoming the change and reflecting on the benefits this will provide French agricultural export. The film ends with a toast to the Camargue, rice and bulls.
