Film Number:NAT 1280
Other titles:SHAPE FILM LIBRARY [Allocated Series Title]
Summary:General Ridgway addresses members of the press, with reflections on the New Year.
Description:Multiple, non-continous, views of General Ridgway's speech are included. While they overlap, each contains unique sections of the speech. Ridgway compliments the press for the importance of their work in facilitating democracy. The New Year is used as a means to reflect on the aims of NATO. Ridgway characterises two central problems for NATO, from which all other issues derive: that deterrence against aggression must be achieved efficently and that defence of all peoples of the treaty nations must be ensured. Assurances are given that the military command of NATO is cognisant of the social and economical costs of these aims.
