Summary:Footage of a pipeline under construction, which is intended to carry fuel from the Atlantic seaboard, direct to the NATO airfields in Europe. Crew digs trench (which partially floods with water); pipe stretches across hill. Surveyors check map. Bulldozer clears earth; tractor with side boom and grapple is used to lift the pipe into the trench. Workmen check joints and fix wooden blocks before (motorised) priming and cleaning machine is attached to the pipe's end; the machine also tars the pipe prior to being wrapped in fibreglass and an outer seal of tough paper, protected by bolts and tar seals ("cathartic protection", insulating the pipe against electric currents). Concrete weights are attached using steel bands, before the pipe is lowered into the water-filled trench. Over the river, the pipe is kept afloat by oil drums. These drums are disconnected and the pipe sinks. Further general scenes of the pipe-laying follow.
