Summary:General Norstad visits Norway. General Norstad and his wife arrive at Oslo Airport where they are greeted by officials including General Finns Lambrechts (Chief of Joint Defence Staff), General Sugden (Commander in Chief Allied Forces Northern Europe), Brigadier Cross and Sivert A Nielsen (Under-Secretary of State for Defence). General Norstad and General Sugden travel by car to Headquarters Allied Forces Northern Europe, where they are greeted by General Cooper, the Chief of Staff. Later, General Norstad visits the Norwegian Minister of Defence, Nils Handal, in the latter's office. General Norstad leaves for Oslo Airport, saying farewell to General Sugden, Sivert Nielsen and others including Ambassador Vens Boyesen, the Norwegian Representative to the NATO Council, before boarding aircraft (bound for Paris).
General Norstad visits Malta. Military officials, including Admiral Grantham, arrive at HAFMED (Headquarters, Allied Forces Mediterranean). General Norstad arrives with Admiral Glover (USN, Acting Commander in Chief, Allied Forces Mediterranean) and meets with military chiefs. Later he speaks with the press. General Norstad and Admiral Glover visit the Governor's Palace to meet Sir Robert Laycock. The two military men and their wives are shown around the Museum by Sir Robert, looking at various exhibits, including suit of armour and a Gloster Gladiator aircraft. Also during their visit to Malta, the Norstads view the statue of Winston Churchill and Grand Harbour. General Norstad reviews Royal Naval Guard of Honour and watches 21-gun salute, before bidding farewell to senior military leaders.
The British delegation, including Anthony Head (Minister of Defence), Sir Richard Powell (Permanent Under Secretary of State) and Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir William F Dickson (Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee, Great Britain), visits SHAPE Headquarters and are received by General Norstad.
