  • Summary: Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip pay a private visit to General Norstad of NATO, April 1957. The Royal Car arrives outside General Norstad's house as children flock round; General and Mrs Norstad greet Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip as they get out of the car and walk into the house. Later, the two couples leave the house again and pose for a photograph. They visit the office inside the house before the Queen and Prince leave; other officers such as Brigadier Cross are also present to bid farewell to the royal couple, departing in their car. Children wave flags. Officers arrive at Camp Voluceau, near Rocquencourt, in anticipation of CPX 7 (Command Post Exercise), April 1957; sign says NO CAMERA BEYOND THIS POINT. Among the officers identified are Admiral Briscoe, General Randolph McPate (Commandant, US Marine Corps), General Hans Speidel, General Nathan F Twining (USAF, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff), General Clemente Primieri, C D Howe (civilian), Lieutenant General H D Graham (Canadian), General Williston D Palmer, Brigadier Cross, General Hodes, General Byers, Admiral Radford, General Heusinger, Admiral Mountbatten, Field Marshal Montgomery (distributing cough drops!), General Norstad and Lord Ismay. Scenes are shot outdoors, in the cloakroom and (briefly) in the conference room. Dr Kurt Sieveking arrives at SHAPE headquarters, where he is greeted by General Schuyler and Brigadier Cross, April 1957. They climb up the steps to the SHAPE main entrance, prior to meeting General Norstad (not seen).
