Summary:A look at the necessity of building to human life, and the work carried out by the Bouwcentrum of Rotterdam, in assisting the building trade.
Description:The film opens on aerial views of Utrecht, as the narrator declares that a growing population needs increased housing. The first section of the film employs a device by which the 'building needs and experiences' of a person are explored "from cradle to grave". Nursing staff feed babies in a maternity house, before there are brought home for the first time. A mother makes use of a planned park, also used by older children. In school, a child dreams of a bicycle, which he later uses to travel to work. Newly built working environments are characterised as spacious and well equipped, with washing facilities and canteens. The man's marriage relies on buildings, specifically the church and city hall. Weekend trips now take place in parks, highways, service stations, farms, cafes [including, possibly, that at Motel Hoornwijck] and stadia. This section ends by stressing that, amongst all of these, the family home is the most important. The film then moves to the Bouwcentrum in Rotterdam and describes the role it plays in assisting and advising the building trade. Advice on factory layout is available, based on appraisals of existing factories, as is indicated by scenes showing the factory refitting of a Douglas C-47 Skytrain (315661). Bouwcentrum is contrasted favourably with a library, providing relevant information more directly and concisely. Specialist research groups with specific experiences, such as the building of hospitals, produce expert advice. Teaching courses are available, as are exhibitions of materials and architectural models. Site visits are organised for Dutch and foreign builders. The film ends in noting that international co-operation is vital in solving problems both specific and general, faced by builders and planners around the world.
