Summary:Film exploring what the ERP-sponsored public health programme in Greece means to the Greek people, in terms of more doctors and nurses, better equipped hospitals, and improved sanitary conditions.
Description:Film describes historical health problems within Greek villages and the responses made using Marshall Plan funds. The [presumed to be fictitious] village of Ardaknos is presented as typifying Greek villages and their struggles with disease. The villagers want to do something about public health, but lack the resources. Big cities also lack medical staff and equipment. Tuberculosis rates in Greece are amongst the highest in Europe, and the country lacks adequate sanatoria for treatment. The "Marshall Plan Public Health Division" meets and plans the building of three new sanatoria to compliment the two existing, previous to the Second World War, with nursing schools for Thessaloniki and Athens. New equipment is provided by the Marshall Plan and individuals are sent abroad for training. DDT spraying proves effective in reducing the problem of malaria. Travelling clinics allow for a doctor to travel as GP and dispenser. Ardaknos receives a new water supply and a doctor to share with other villages. Greece's historical health issues can be remedied through the Marshall Plan.
