Summary:Account of the historical and present-day importance of the Corinth Canal to the commerce and prosperity of Greece, its destruction during the Second World War and its rebuilding - with US help. The nearby thriving port of Piraeus prospers partly as a result of the import of Marshall Aid goods.
Description:Comparison of the the historical spleandor of Corinth and its modern appearance. Then on to the canal; as shipping passes at sea level, a train crosses the canal by bridge. The village of Isthmia is situated at the Aegean end of the canal, with boats passing through on their way to the Ionian sea. The port of Pireas to the east, is shown and described as Greece's busiest port, due to it being the arrival point of Marshall Aid goods. Ships "Atlantic Dragon" and "Shanghai Victory" are visible. A smaller Greek vessel is loaded with goods and sails towards Isthmia. The wartime blocking of the canal by retreating Nazi troops is described, and archive footage of the dumping of railcars and explosive charges shown. Greek and US engineers worked to clear the canal after the war, and by November 1948 it was fully open again.
